Comprehensive care of people with diabetes requires periodic testing of HbA1c. One approach of achieving this is through point-of-care-testing (POCT) or near patient testing, which is conducted outside of a centralised laboratory by clinical staff. POCT has the advantage of enabling clinical decisions during clinical encounters, optimising care, increasing satisfaction level and improving adherence to diabetes self-care activities. Educating the clinical staff and maintaining their competency levels, required for reliable test results, remain the cornerstones of a safe and efficient use of POCT.
