| Sumario: | Clinical social work practice has been significantly impacted by the evolution of electronic communication through the development of cyber technology. The increased methods for electronic communication raise questions about the impact of electronic communication on patient confidentiality. This paper will review the way that clinical social work ethics have addressed the use of electronic communication with clients, insurers, or other professionals. The history of confidentiality is briefly reviewed. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act will be discussed as a new context for confidentiality in clinical social work practice.
