Her work A Silent Death is concerned with the image of mother both idealized and developed through a negative approach following the death of mother. The image of mother in Simone de Beauvoir, ensuing due to different feelings towards mother and thus idealized, will be analyzed on the basis of young girl's love for her mother and the mother's love for her daughter and from Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic approach. In A Silent Death, the writer narrates the tragic story of her mother beyond the age of seventy-eight, also focusing on complicated and intense emotions. Filled with autobiographical information, the work lets Simone de Beauvoir convey her emotional life, and her personal experiences of her youth that shaped her life, through her mother. Beauvoir's sense of pity for her mother due to her choice to take over the whole responsibility for the household and her two daughters on her own is reflected throughout the work. It is possible to observe in the work an image of woman who, spurred by the desire to prove her existence, participates in the work life, who rebels against her deprivations and who takes pains for solidarity. In other words, she is a woman who has become productive in social life. In the early part of the work, the writer draws the portrait of the ideal mother who thinks of and even makes a fuss over her daughter with her love-filled heart, and she takes steps to abolish the distance between her mother and her. The mother cannot confess the difficulties she faces to anybody, even to herself, and she is tormented by the fear of remaining alone. Deprived of self-confidence and afraid of dying, the mother refuses to admit that she is growing older. She even finds herself in a lifelong struggle in order to avert the idea of death. Thus, the existence of mother is revealed as a noble value. She does not evaluate the world from another one's perspective; she conducts everything in a self-denying manner; she is motivated by the instinct of motherhood, but her enthusiasm does not allow her to get rid of her narrow-minded and really narrow surroundings. There she usually lives with a phobia and hesitation. Her agony and suffering both in her pride and love is dealt with in an effective way. In the ensuing pages of the novel, we see the children deprived of love, affection and interest, thus clashing with the mother who constantly attempts to keep and take them under control. At this point, both the mother and child develop negative feelings in the relationship between the mother denied and child denied. The child, possessed by the feeling that she is not loved, comes to have inferiority complex and anxiety. The mother, who always demands everything for herself all her life, keeps her children under pressure through bans and orders. The child that causes the mother to be ruined appears to be a destructive element. The tie between the child reduced to a functional object and her mother is largely damaged and the child cannot find the love she deserves. The mother who instinctively tries to grow affection for her child, who is part of her own body, develops unfavourable feelings for her own children and tends to reject them, and as a result the price of this case is paid by the children who are inherently blameless. Even though the writer focuses on the tie and longing that she tries to build with her mother by considering the importance of the motherly love in the child's spiritual life, she fails to prevent the agony and suffering caused by the lack of motherly love. According to Freud, in the absence of mother or her love, the child cannot be sure that her needs will be met, and so she is captured by fear. The children who therefore run after revenge on the mother may sometimes adopt aggressive and hostile attitudes. The fact that children are compelled to live without affection and love shows indeed that they are punished. The abnegation of the mother as a negative character in A Silent Death is explicable by Freud's psychoanalytic approach. In the background of the lack or rejection of the mother lie the longing for mother and the suppressed feelings. The child, when identified with her family, will want to be like them. However, if she chooses her parents as object, she will desire to possess them. Though the ties between the mother and child are broken, there appears to be some sort of closeness between the mother and her child as she is the cause of the child's presence in the world. We even get the impression that the writer attempts to eliminate the distance between her mother and her on occasions. Whereas a distanced attitude is presented to the mother in the work, there is sometimes a mention of the yearning for motherly care and warmth. The writer emphasizes the thought that there is always a strong love besides an aggressive tendency. It appears that as the mother is unable to attain happiness in her own life, she fails to direct her love to her children and to reveal her feelings. That the mother deprives her children of motherly love is attributed to the fact that she herself leads a troubled and difficult life. In A Silent Death, the process of adopting a negative attitude to the mother who is often abnegated and who loses her importance is analysed. The data about the mother's funeral ceremony lead to the thought that the writer hardly felt warm to her mother. Death symbolizes separation, thus showing disengagement with the mother in concrete and abstract terms. At this point, the distance and coldness between the mother and her daughters are revealed is such a way that even the reader cannot ignore it. The fact that Beauvoir could not build a warm tie with her mother shows even that she had lost her mother before she died. In the process from her childhood to marriage and from her mother's illness to funeral, the writer's attitudes and speeches are away from sentimentalism. To Beauvoir, the mother's attempts to distance her own children from her, to deprive them of her love and her attitudes are senseless indeed. She does not find it fit for a mother to abnegate her children. As can be seen, she adopts a negative attitude to the mother who is about to cease to be. There appears a distinct sense of alienation and distance between the mother and her daughter. The underlying cause of the lack of affection for the mother is sensed as the lack of mother's love for her children. Doubtless, this case causes the child to be distanced from the mother and the distance between to be unbridgeable. The mother who proves to be a negative model with most of her aspects takes her place in the writer's world as an individual who cannot treat her children as a mother should on most occasions. Beauvoir reflects that the death of her mother may be a bitter loss for her own friends and circles, but not for her daughters. The work under analysis places the emphasis on the lack of emotion and warmth to the mother and reduces the mother to any subject. The writer deprived of motherly love exhibits a sort of distance to her mother upon her death, which may be taken as an attempt at revenge. In A Silent Death the absence of mother is transferred in a nonchalant manner, which is described as a shocking literary experience. The writer, telling the tragic story of mother on death bed, shares her individual experiences guiding her life and her emotional life with her readers. Beauvoir finds a chance to face her own life in A Silent Death, drawing as a glorious value the portrait of ideal mother who thinks of her child with her love-filled heart and sacrifice. However, in the further parts of the novel, she draws attention to the motherdaughter relationship drawn with a negative image, depending on the rule of abnegation. The work effectively reflects the child's development of antagonism to mother due to action and reaction principle and the denigration of mother as a negative character. In A Silent Death, presenting a document of human relationships, two different souls of mother contradicting with each other are distinctly drawn in a thin line. Finding the chance to face her own life, Simone de Beauvoir exemplifies the state of mankind faced by the meaninglessness of death within the context of mother-daughter, and offers the reader the chance to reinterpret the image of mother. Kendi yaşamı ile yüzleşme olanağı bulan Simone de Beauvoir, ölümün anlamsızlığı karşısındaki insanlık durumunu anne-çocuk ilişkisi bağlamında örneklendirir ve okura anne imgesini yeniden yorumlama olanağını sunar. pubtype: Academic Journal doctype: Article src: R language: Azerbaijani refInfo: copyright: @attributes: flag: Y custom: Copyright of Electronic Turkish Studies is the property of Electronic Turkish Studies and its content may not be copied or emailed to multiple sites without the copyright holder's express written permission.
