Simon. 3- and 4-year-olds succeeded on patterns with a code length of 1, but not on patterns with a code length of more than 1. 5-year-olds succeeded on patterns with a code length of 2, while 6-, 7-, and 8-year-olds succeeded on patterns of code length 3. An additional factor, depending on whether the model pattern was still present during performance or not, was found to have little overall effect. It is suggested that preschool children have difficulty in coordinating information from 2 independent sources.
