Ma te ri - al and Met hods: EPTB ca ses fol lo wed up bet we en Ja nu ary 2004-March 2009 we re analy zed ret ros pec ti vely. Me di cal his to ri es, symptoms, physi cal, and la bo ra tory fin dings, tre at ment and out co me of the ca ses we re analy zed in de ta il and re cor ded. Di ag no sis of ex tra pul mo nary tu ber cu lo sis was ma de with bac te ri o lo gic and/or his to pat ho lo gic and/or ra di o lo gic fin dings along with cli ni cal fin dings, and res pon ce to tre at ment. Re sults: Sixty pa ti ents we re inc lu ded in the study. Of the ca ses, 35 (58%) we re fe ma les and me an age was 49.5 ± 17.8 ye ars (ran ge 18-76). Bo ne-jo int tu ber cu lo sis and tu ber cu lo us me nin gi tis cons ti tu ted ap pro xi - ma tely two- thirds of the ca ses. Ot her EPTB ca ses involved lymph no de, ple u ra, pe ri to ne um, uri nary system and bre ast tu ber cu lo sis res pec ti vely in terms of fre qu ency. Twenty-thre e per cent of the ca ses mul ti-or gan in vol ve ment. An un derl ying di se a se was pre sent in 21 (35%) ca ses. Ge ne ral and cli ni cal fe a - tu res of the ca ses we re de ter mi ned and in di ca ted. On ra di o lo gic exa mi na ti on, se qu el le si on was pre sent in 25 (42%) ca ses and mi li ary in vol ve ment was pre sent in 7 (12%) ca ses on chest X-ray. Aci do-re sis tant ba cil li were se en in 16 (26.7%) ca ses in di rect mic ros co pic exa mi na ti on of va ri o us samp les with Ehr licl- Zi ehl-Ne el sen met hod. Myco bac te ri um tu ber cu lo sis comp lex was recovered in 25 (42%) ca ses. His to pat - ho lo gic eva lu a ti on of 16 out of 27 ca ses (59%) revealed as gra nu lo ma to us inf lam ma ti on. Mor ta lity ra te was 8.3% and se qu e la ra te was 3.3%. Conc lu si on: Tu ber cu lo sis is still an im por tant he alth prob lem in de ve - lo ping co un tri es such as Tur key. The review of EPTB cases revealed that mor ta lity and se qu e la ra tes we - re low du e to early di ag no sis and tre at ment.
