Ma te ri al and Met hods: A pre test and post test pat ter ned in ter ven ti on study was con duc ted in 2007 among he alth ca re pro vi ders par ti ci pa - ting in a tra i ning co ur se on HIV/AIDS and uni ver sal pre ca u ti ons. The par ti ci pants con sis ted of 158 he - alth ca re pro fes si o nals from 7 pub lic hos pi tals and 2 pub lic den tal cli nics. In for ma ti on was col lec ted re gar ding de mog rap hic de ta ils, HIV/AIDS re la ted know led ge, at ti tu des and per cep ti ons abo ut pa ti ents at the be gin ning and the end of the co ur se. Pre- and post-tra i ning dic ho to mo us po int sca le sco res we - re com pa red. Re sults: Of the par ti ci pants, 72.6 % we re fe ma les. Only 30.0 % of the res pon dents repor ted a scal pel or ne ed le stick in jury at le ast on ce last ye ar. So me of the par ti ci pants (40%) tho ught that it was ne ces sary to ta ke ex tra in fec ti on con trol pre ca u ti ons for pa ti ents with HIV. The ave ra ge pre- and post-tra i ning me an know led ge sco res we re 9.32 ± 2.1 (3-13) and 12.76 ± 2.3 (5-17), res pec - ti vely. The me an pre- and post-tra i ning be li efs sco res we re 12.37 ± 3.1 (3-19) and 15.57± 3.8 (6-22), res pec ti vely. The re we re sig ni fi cant dif fe ren ces in the pre-and post-tra i ning me an sco res of the res - pon ses re la ted to at ti tu des to ward pa ti ents with AIDS. Conc lu si on: The re was im pro ve ment in know led ge and ne ga ti ve at ti tu des on pa ti ents with AIDS at the end of the tra i ning. The re sults of this study sug ges ted that the ne ga ti ve at ti tu des of he alth ca re pro vi ders to wards in di vi du als with AIDS du e to the fe ar of trans mis si on and ina de qu a te know led ge co uld be im pro ved with tra i ning.
