Ma te ri al and Met hods: Forty pa ti ents sche du led for la pa ros co pic sur gery (Pa ti ent Gro up) and 30 he althy vo lun te ers as con trol sub jects (Con trol Gro up) we re en rol led in the study. The pa ti ent gro up was ran do mi zed to desf lu ra ne gro up (n= 0) and se vof lu ra ne gro up (n= 20). Blo od samp les we re col lec ted pre o pe ra ti vely and at pos to pe ra ti ve 6 ho urs in or der to me a su re the le vels of TAS, TOS, OSI, and pa ra o xo na se and ary les te ra se ac ti vi ti es. Pre o pe ra ti ve and pos to pe ra ti ve la bo ra tory fin dings of se vof lu ra ne and desf lu ra ne gro up we re com pa red with the Mann Whit ney U test bet we en gro ups and the Wil co xon test wit hin a gro up. Re sults: Pre o pe ra ti ve TOS, OSI le vels in the pa ti ent gro up we re sig ni fi cantly in cre a sed and ary - les te ra se ac ti vi ti es we re sig ni fi cantly dec re a sed com pa red to the con trol gro up (p<0.05) [(TOS (?mol H2O2 equ - iv/L), 19.64 ± 2.16 vs. 14.25 ± 1.83), (OSI 1.85 ± 0.53 vs. 0.98 ± 0.24), (Ary les te ra se (U/L), 45.19 ± 6.82 vs. 49.66 ± 4.78)]. The re was no sta tis ti cally sig ni fi cant dif fe ren ce bet we en se vof lu ra ne and desf lu ra ne gro up in la bo ra tory fin dings of the pre o pe ra ti ve and the pos to pe ra ti ve pe ri od (p> 0.05). Pre o pe ra ti ve and pos to pe ra ti ve TAS, TOS, OSI re sults and ac ti vi ti es of pa ra o xo na se and ary les te ra se we re not sig ni fi cantly dif fe rent in the se vof lu ra ne gro - up (p> 0.05). Alt ho ugh the pre o pe ra ti ve and pos to pe ra ti ve le vels of TAS and TOS and pa ra o xo na se and ary les - te ra se ac ti vi ti es in the desf lu ra ne gro up was not sig ni fi cantly dif fe rent, pos to pe ra ti ve OSI was sig ni fi cantly in cre a sed (p< 0.05) (OSI 1.80 ± 0.57 vs 2.20 ± 0.67). Conc lu si on: Pa ti ents with gall sto ne are ex po sed to a po tent oxi da ti ve stress inf lu en cing TOS, OSI le vels and ary les te ra se ac ti vi ti es. Se vof lu ra ne and desf lu ra ne had si mi lar ef fects on oxi da ti ve stress du ring la po ros co pic sur gery in this pa ti ent gro up; ho we ver, OSI was in cre a sed in the desf lu ra ne gro up in the pos to pe ra ti ve pe ri od com pa red to pre o pe ra ti ve le vels (p< 0.05).
