Parents' decisions may affect their children's lives in the future. It is crucial to address parental feelings after the diagnosis to help them prevail over their grief and redivert their focus back to children's needs. Aims: To present the best available evidence on parental experience of having a child with Autistic Spectrum Disorder Data sources: A search of electronic databases of published research studies (1999 to 2010) was conducted using appropriate search terms. Review methods: Cooper's five stages of methodology (problem identification, data collection, data evaluation, analysis and presentation) were used as a framework to guide this review. Findings: Twenty studies that met the inclusion criteria were reviewed. Three main themes were identified: gender differences in parental roles; parental feelings and needs after receiving the diagnosis; and parental stressors and types of coping strategies. Conclusion: It is pivotal to address parental needs and stressors after the child's diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder in order to provide appropriate support to parents and their children. Parents who are more accepting of the diagnosis are more likely to collaborate with the professionals to maximise children's potential. pubtype: Academic Journal doctype: research systematic review Journal Article ougenre: Article language: English refInfo: holdings: @attributes: islocal: N |
