Cervical Ganglioneuroblastoma Mimicking Thyroid Tissue in a Young Adult: Differential Diagnosis.

| Sumario: | A 17-year-old female patient presented with a cervical mass enlarging for one month. On physical examination, a firm, mobile and multilobulated painless mass located in the left supra clavicular region extending to the trachea was palpated. Neck ultrasonography revealed a 6 x 4 x 3 cm sized encapsulated mass with multiple internal solid and cystic nodules and heterogenous echogenicity. Surgical excision was performed as cytologic examination was benign. The localization, encapsulated and bilobed appearance ot the mass during surgery resembled thyroid tissue but histopathological examination was consistent with ganglioneuroblastoma. Ganglioneuroblastoma is mostly a childhood disease and rarely seen in young adults and in the neck region. This case is presented in the light of the pertinent literature to remind that ganglioneuroblastoma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of thyroid diseases in young adults regarding its location and macroscopic appearance. |
