| Sumario: | This is a qualitative, descriptive study, carried out with women submitted to episiotomy during natural childbirth at a teaching hospital, in order to understand how they deal with this intervention. The objective of this study was to build the discourse of the collective subject on the feelings of women about this intervention. A semi-structured interview was used to collect data and the information was analyzed according to the stages proposed by the method. The women were asked if they knew episiotomy and the reason it was done. Central ideas arose that it was good for both mother and child. The concepts reported by the women have been stated by obstetricians for centuries and express the thoughts shared by all women, showing that these ideas are still present in the culture of the population, although they do not coincide with the current scientific evidence. |
