Sumario:The number of older adults with developmental disabilities is increasing rapidly. Descriptive data describing community involvement and quality of life for a sample of older people with developmental disabilities are presented with the intention of helping therapeutic recreation specialists more appropriately address the needs and interests of this population. Indepth interterviews with 34 older adults with developmental disabilities or their caregivers were conducted. Community involvement issues related to the goals of independence, productivity, and integration were ascertained to effectively portray quality of life among members of this population. A variety of perceived needs and perceptions emerged from the sample, similar to those in the general aging population. Therapeutic recreation specialists are challenged to evaluate existing literature, social policies, and service delivery practices with this emerging population in light of the findings. The role of therapeutic recreation as it relates to community belonging for older adults with developmental disabilities may need redefining to exhibit a greater sensitivity and responsiveness to their abilities, needs, and wants. Flexibility in service delivery and design appears to be critical as therapeutic recreation specialists move into the twenty-first century.
