| Sumario: | There exists, at the global level, a rising preoccupation about the unprecedented increase in chronic diseases. This, in great measure, stems from the fact that many patients are currently able to sustain their diseases for decades, causing a constant demand for permanent and specialised care. Thus, for the affected person and family, to be ill implies the mobilization of a series of resources, dedicated to the re-establishment of health, or at least, to minimize the most harmful consequences that the disease creates. Such alternatives will depend essentially from the opportunities that society offers to the individual in order to face the disease, and the meaning that the affected person gives to these.
