| Sumario: | For many physicians who have completed training and decided to start a private practice, there may be overwhelming concern about the high cost of starting a practice. Rent, furniture, supplies, paging and answering services, computer equipment, and practice software are just a few of the upfront costs necessary to begin a medical practice. There may also be debt remaining from medical school, which can reduce the amount of money spent on a practice. Although investments in these durable goods to begin a practice can be made, a great idea, such as using electronic medical records or prescribing, maybe prohibitive not only in cost but also in time to research and determine the best products. In addition, practice locations and patterns may be in flux and create a temptation to use paper documentation despite the benefits of practice software. This article reviews what software is available for the medical practice at no cost to prevent regression back to paper documentation.
