| Sumario: | Nausea/vomiting (N/V) is a common phenomenon in early pregnancy that every nurse practitioner (NP) caring for pregnant women will encounter. For some women, N/V of pregnancy (NVP) is so severe that it results in a state of hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). A pregnant woman with HG will likely require hospitalization because of the alterations in physiologic homeostasis. The authors discuss the incidence, etiology, and complications of NVP; anticipatory guidance and education, which are based on early risk assessment; and nutrition advice, vita-min supplements, alternative therapies, and pharmacotherapy used to alleviate NVP and obviate the need for hospitalization due to HG.
