Smith (WHS) Ltd. and two key suppliers over the chain's attempt to bypass the returns authorisation process had reached an impasse in first week of August 2003. As the Christmas sell-in continued, publishers voiced fears that if WHS pushed ahead with the move, it would set a precedent for other booksellers to follow. Publishers involved have so far shied away from ceasing to supply books until WHS clarifies its intentions. Hundreds of thousands of pounds were knocked off payments by WHS to two suppliers, as the chain deducted the cost of returns without waiting for credit notes to be issued. WHS has declined to comment on this issue. |
