ab: An instrument for measuring and tracking changes in auditory skill development over time was developed for use with a group of children with profound deafness who received a MED-EL COMBI 40+ cochlear implant. The aim of this paper is to describe the use of this instrument, the Checklist of Auditory Communication Skills, and to present results obtained both pre- and post-operatively on a population of children who participated in the MED-EL COMBI 40+ Cochlear Implant System Clinical Trial in the United States. The Checklist of Auditory Communication Skills is intended to provide a means for rehabilitative professionals to track progress on a variety of auditory therapy targets arranged in hierarchical fashion. These behaviors range from the most basic detection skills through advanced auditory processing.
