| Sumario: | Anyone linked with the publishing industry and the research literature-be they publisher, researcher, librarian, end user, or other-is being impacted by the culture shift of the open access movement in scholarly publishing. Many articles have appeared in the library literature, but a search of the life sciences literature was done in preparation for this article to see what publishers were saying about open access to their readers-for the most part, the scientific community. Is the discussion segmented with an 'us versus them' division in opinions between publishers, the scientific community, and librarians? The literature that was identified and the sampling of citations and abstracts included in this article show that opinions vary greatly in each group involved. The issue is extremely complicated with major ramifications for all.
