| Sumario: | Descriptive transversal study realized in 2001 from a sample of nine faculties and schools of nursing in Latin American countries in the four subregions of the Latin America association of schools and faculties of nursing (ALADEFE). The purpose wear to know the profile of the licenciate in nursing, the facts that generated the curricula modifications, the changes done in the academic plans in the post three years, and the requirements needed for certification toward professionalization.The recollection of data was done through an instrument to be answered by electronic media.It was observed that the profile of the licenciate was oriented toward a professional generality with capacity to give integral assistence to individual, family and community, management and administration, research and educations. The transformations in the academic plans were done on ethics, research, informatics, interaction, human communication and the fundamentals of leadership.As the facts and processes of such modifications were identified:Self-evaluation, changes in the socio-political, epidemiologic, demographic scientific and technological aspects and work opportunities.Among the new competencies and paradigm of learning it were mentioned the reflexive criticism, self-learning, learning based an problems, case studies, documental research and the use of simulators.It concludes that the licenciate in nursing is a graduate with solid formation in the discipline who has the opportunity to develop the professional role with autonomy and ethical base to give humanly care and a clear evidence of the social function.
