| Summary: | Improved technology and advances in medical practices have led to an increased ability to save the lives of sick and low birth weight infants. However, the very task-oriented interventions and care employed to sustain the infant's life also pose a major threat to the neurodevelopmental stability and long-term outcomes of the child. A developmentally supportive approach to care has been shown to be effective in counterbalancing the intense negative sequelae of medical interventions on the newborns neuro-motor, behavioral and growth milestones. This manuscript examines the data-based interventions that comprise a developmentally supportive care approach to care of the newborn. In addition, it reviews the concept of newborn competence and the role of developmental care in supporting neurobehavioral development of the newborn. Developmental care programs are reviewed with presentation of practical resources for the health care team to institute this philosophy of care within their practice setting. |
