The prototype, winner of InfoRad at the 1997 Radiology conference, is a multimedia computer package that aims to inform these healthcare staff about the local obstetric ultrasound department and also provide basic educational information about ultrasound scanning. The prototype was designed by a team of clinical and academic staff from Salford Royal Hospitals NHS Trust, the University of Salford and the Higher Technical Institute (Nicosia). This team comprised clinical experts in midwifery, obstetrics and ultrasound and computer programmers. The prototype runs on a multimedia PC under Windows 95 or higher. It has an extensive media base comprising videos, medical images, graphics (dynamic and static) and sound. The prototype navigation system, based on a book metaphor, was supplemented by various navigation aids such as a conceptual map, advance organisers and a free text search facility. The screen layout was developed to be aesthetically pleasing, being well balanced and attractive.Preliminary analysis of the prototype, using midwife volunteers, indicates it is an effective and valuable learning resource. Under controlled conditions using a repeated measures study that assessed knowledge before and after prototype use identified a significant increase (p<0.05) in midwife knowledge, rising from a mean of 73% (before prototype use) to 89% (after prototype use). The midwives indicated the prototype was a good way to be informed about the obstetric ultrasound department and that the prototype would be a valuable resource for the education and training of students.It is likely that electronic information systems of this type will have a valuable role to play in the education, training and decision support of healthcare staff and students of the future.
