| Sumario: | Good quality health services should be available to all. The right of individuals with learning disabilities to share the same quality of service as anyone else in society needs to be addressed. However, opportunities are now available for this client group to use and access primary health care services in the same way as other clients in the community. Nursing now provides opportunities for people with learning disabilities to express their needs and encourages them to become involved in the decision making that affects their lives. This article examines some of the ways in which people with a learning disability can be assisted in accessing these services and highlights the key role that learning disability and practice nurses play in providing care for people with learning disabilities in the community. It also addresses some of the issues arising from the recent document Signposts for Success (DoH, 1998) which offers extensive guidance on the strategic development of services for people with a learning disability over the next decade. |
