      ab: The telecommunications industry continues to invest billions of dollars in mobile satellite (MSAT) systems to provide communications when traditional land line and cellular systems are unavailable. These systems are designed not to compete with but rather to complement cellular services. MSAT includes voice, facsimile, and data for stationary and en route communications. Thus MSAT can be used by emergency medical services providers to supplement radio and cellular communications. Because of the differences in each of the many systems soon to be available, however, the adoption of MSAT requires careful analysis so that the optimum system for each individual provider can be selected.
