Sumario:Nurse executives are increasingly being called upon to support decisions with outcomes data. Optical mark scanning technology allows for immediate access to large data sets that have been collected using the traditional paper-and-pen methods of documentation. Examples of how scanning technology has been used to support administrative, quality improvement, research, and education programs in the department of nursing at The Johns Hopkins Hospital are presented. Options and costs to consider when purchasing a scanner system are reviewed and the level of personnel within a nursing department needed to run various phases of the scanner system is discussed.
