Sumario:Due to a higher morbidity rate and a greater need for medications, the elderly are at a higher risk for problems with medications. Literature on intervention strategies related to the medication problems of the elderly proved that education for the elderly makes a significant difference. The elderly who received this education had a greater knowledge of medications and they made fewer medication errors. Medication education for the elderly in the community is an urgent need. The purpose of this study was to provide nursing intervention via individualized or group teaching strategies for elderly people in the community, and to evaluate its effectiveness. A quasi-experimental design was chosen for this study. The subjects consisted of 223 elderly people over 65 years of age in Northern Taiwan. Written materials were given to the elderly after they had been taught. Data related to pre- and post-teaching were collected and then analyzed using SPSS computer software. The research findings revealed that both the individualized and the group teaching were effective in improving the elderly's medication knowledge and medication behavior. Individualized teaching brought about significant improvement in knowledge of proper usage of medication, and group teaching brought about significant improvement in medication compliance. While individualized teaching can be provided in the home or clinic, it is recommended that group teaching be made available for the elderly.
