Purpose: To set up the Retrieval and Application of Research in Nursing (RARIN) project, developed to decrease the time lag between scientific discovery and revision of nursing practice. Source: A $380,000, 3-year grant from the National Library of Medicine funded this project at Stanford University Hospital. Conclusion: Four experimental interventions implemented with the RARIN project. (1) Installation of computer terminals linked to more than 100 information databases supported by local and national institutions. (2) Two nursing research databases provided critical research information in a usable form for the staff nurse. (3) Provision of education for nurses. Training includes use of the information-retrieval system, basics of research critique, and methods for using research findings to change nursing practice and policy. (4) Provision of consultation and support for nurses to use existing research and conduct their research. Feedback is very positive from these initial efforts, and nurses are enthusiastically sharing their newfound research knowledge to change practice.
