| Sumario: | This is the final part of a three-part module designed to improve your skill in teaching relaxation techniques to oncology clients. Unit I (1) discussed the effects of stress on the whole person and reviewed the literature concerning the benefits oncology clients derive from relaxation exercises. In Unit II (2) the assessment, diagnosis, and planning phases of the nursing process were used to develop individualized relaxation training programs which might include deep breathing, passive muscle relaxation, and guided imagery. The implementation and evaluation of these programs is discussed here. Following completion of this portion of the module you will be able to: (a) Describe five steps related to preparing the client and environment for instruction of the relaxation technique(s). (b) Describe four major components of instruction specific to each of the three relaxation exercises. (c) State three major components of instruction for passive muscle relaxation. (d) State three major components of instructions for guided imagery. (e) List four factors which the nurse and client should evaluate after each training session. (f) List two tools that may facilitate ongoing practice and use of the techniques by the client when the nurse's presence is no longer required. You can test your ability to meet these objectives by completing the post-test. You may wish to reread pertinent portions of the article if you cannot answer a particular question correctly.
