A total of 98 nurses participated in this study in a mid-Atlantic military medical center. The current text-based orders in the Composite Health Care System, fielded worldwide, were redesigned into a graphical user interface (GUI). The GUI was significantly faster than CHCS to learn and nearly twice as fast for nurses to use after substantial practice. Error rates were significantly lower with GU than CHCS. Third, nurses rated the GUI interface significantly higher than CHCS on user satisfaction scores. Using stepwise regression, the set of nurse characteristics explained 37.7% of GUI interaction speeds and 31.2% of CHCS speeds. The predictors of GUI speed were prior GUI experience, (18.6%), age (11.7%), spatial visualization (4.6%) and gender (2.8). For CHCS, the predictors were spatial memory (16.5%), prior CHCS experience (7.5%), spatial visualization (3.8%) and gender (3.4%).
