ab: Recent distribution failures have prompted the Independent Publishers Guild to work towards a template publisher/distributor contract. While there are many excellent book distribution companies, business failures usually share similar characteristic, new IT systems, loss of profitability by the distributor and loss of client confidence, leading to an unsustainable loss of business by the distributor. It is easy to see why some publishers try to transfer their business elsewhere as soon as their distributor is in, or is rumored to be in, difficulties. In their desperation to get their books away from a distributor heading for difficulties or already in liquidation, they may enter into less favorable or less suitable arrangements, especially in the current environment of a contracting distribution market. If the real art of publishing lies not in creating books, but in getting books cost-effectively to market, it follows that distribution is a crucial ingredient of a publisher's marketing mix. Poor distribution can be a serious impediment to customer relations and business growth.
