The fragility and uncertainty of proper masculine self-expression is unpacked and reimagined across a variety of texts, demonstrating how various authors have negotiated with the notions of teenage masculinity, belonging, isolation, and rage. Cette étude de romans, de films et de musique datés de la fin des années 1970 au début du nouveau millénaire s'intéresse aux représentations fictionnelles et populaires de fusillades dans les écoles, notamment celles du massacre de Columbine, en 1999. L'article étudie aussi les notions de masculinité, d'hétérosexualité normative, de gloire et d'infamie, d'homophobie et de violence au sein de la culture étatsunienne.
