Anxiety about gender, power, the economy (the role of money, concerns about gambling), the role of education, the importance of class differences, and the rise of nationalism (Spain vs. France, predominantly) captured much of intellectual debate (and literature) of that century. This article studies these concerns in Gálvez's play, and then traces the incorporation of similar themes in works by Antonio Gil y Zarate, Joaquina García Balmaseda, Rosario de Acuña, and others. La familia a la moda (1805), la importante comedia de María Rosa de Gálvez, combate y anticipa una amplia gama de temas repetida durante el resto del siglo diecinueve español. Las ansiedades sobre el género, el poder, la economía (el papel de dinero, las preocupaciones respecto al juego), así como la función de la educación, las diferencias entre las clases sociales y la intensificación del nacionalismo (predominantemente, la tensión entre España y Francia) dominan el debate intelectual (y literario) de dicho siglo.
