Following a survey of the reception of Baudelaire's work in Spain from 1857 to 1910 and its translation from the 1880s, the essay develops the hypothesis that Marquina's transformations of the source text work to accommodate the poetological conventions of a Spanish literary system primed, from well before this first translation of the poems appeared, to react unfavourably to the verse by a critical discourse that predominantly portrayed Baudelaire's poetry as unpalatably or counterproductively transgressive. It argues that this accommodation was achieved by stylistic strategies embodying elements of performance that function to 'deflect' the force of potentially contentious propositional content. En este artículo se estudia desde un enfoque más cultural que prosódico la estrategia traductológica que exhibe la traducción de Las Flores del mal de Carlos Baudelaire hecha por Eduardo Marquina (1905). Resumida la recepción crítica de Baudelaire en España de 1857 a 1910 y las primeras traducciones de sus obras, se baraja la hipótesis de que las transformaciones efectuadas por Marquina sirven para acomodar su traducción a las convenciones poetológicas de un sistema literario español en el que aún antes de publicarse esta primera versión española de las poesías de Baudelaire, la crítica se empeñaba en difundir una imagen predominantemente desfavorable de la poesía baudelairiana, la cual, decíase, rompía de forma contraproducente con lo estética y moralmente aceptable.
