      ab: Aim: The aim of this paper was to examine if among alcohol dependent subjects hope is positively related to mental health. Additional aim was to verify if length of abstinence and involvement in Alcoholics Anonymous are important factors for mental health and hope. Method: The sample consisted of 115 dependent subjects participating in Alcoholics Anonymous from Wielkopolska. The following tools were used: Herth Hope Scale (HHS), tree scales being indicators of mental health: level of stress, evaluation of life up to now and subjective mental health as well as two one item scales regarding length of abstinence and length of being in Alcoholics Anonymous. Results: Noticed positive correlation between hope and evaluation of life up to now as well as negative correlation between hope and level of stress. Length of abstinence and length of being in Alcoholics Anonymous negatively related to level of stress. Length of abstinence correlated positively with subjective evaluation of mental health. Conclusion: Hope is an relevant factor for mental health of Alcoholics Anonymous. Higher level of hope is positively related to evaluation of live. Additionally hope the same as length of abstinence and length of being in Alcoholics Anonymous were buffer the stress level. Participating in Alcoholics Anonymous is related to better evaluation of mental health.
