Following the implementation of its Retek merchandising and forecasting system, WHS introduced centralised buying from selected local book suppliers, including Countryside Books, Phillimore, Tempus, Breedon and Sutton. Chris McLaren, executive group director at Tempus, said selling to WHS on a national level meant that each local title received the appropriate attention. But smaller publishers not supplying the chain's central buying team said that their books had been blocked from going on sale in branches.
