The year began with the transforming success for Canongate of "Life of Pi," Man Booker 2002 winner, which propelled independent publishing into the limelight. It reinforced the point that company size is no indicator of list quality. But the mid-size publishers still faced what they saw as unfair practices from some retailers in 2003. Amazon caused outrage among smaller suppliers when it added a £1.99 handling charge to titles it classified as hard to find. Publishers said many such titles were available immediately for dispatch from recognised distributors. |
