ab: Publishers thinking of getting into the U.S. market for the first time, or reviewing their existing arrangements, are advised to take the distribution route. The U.S. is already the single largest export market for British publishers, worth £ 214 million in 2002, up 0.5 percent on the previous year. Distribution through either a full-service distributor or U.S. publisher offers some substantial benefits, including the opportunity to build a brand. It also offers both bigger volume sales and a greater share of the retail price than do rights or coedition models, and makes it easier for British publishers to control sales of the whole product line.
