Material and Methods: The study was observational, where was included a sample of 800 students from first to fifth year of public high schools of the district of Chiclayo. To assess the level of Internet addiction, we used the "Internet Addiction Test" (IAT), which assesses the impact of Internet use in social interactions and the influence of Internet use in everyday life. Results: A total of 800 students participated in the study, in equal distribution by sex and age, of which 780 (97%) use the Internet. Internet addiction was found in 68 (8,5%), most often between 15-19 (5%); also, 206 (25.7%) were at risk of Internet addiction, with a predominance in males (5,3%), origin urban (6,8% vs 3,8%), under lower and under upper socioeconomic level (6,6%), usage time >10h/week (5,9%), access at home (5,8%), followed by the cell (5,2%). The most common reasons for use were to have a personal space, play online and communicating with known. Conclusions: The frequency of Internet addiction was 8,5%. The characteristics of those who present Internet addiction most important are age 15- 19 years, male, urban origin and Internet access at home and on the phone Objetivo: Identificar las características de la adicción a internet en estudiantes de nivel secundario de colegios estatales del distrito de Chiclayo en el año 2015. Material y Métodos: Se realizó un estudio observacional, donde se incluyó una muestra de 800 estudiantes del primer al quinto año de secundaria de cinco colegios estatales del distrito de Chiclayo. Para evaluar el nivel de adicción a Internet se utilizó el “Test de Adicción a Internet” (IAT), con un coeficiente Alfa de Crombach (α) de 0,89, que evalúa el impacto del uso de Internet en las interacciones sociales y la influencia del uso de Internet en la vida diaria. Resultados: Participaron 800 alumnos, en igual distribución según sexo y edad, de los cuales 780 (97%) usan Internet. Se encontró adicción a Internet en 68 (8,5%), con mayor frecuencia entre 15-19 años (5%); además, se encontró a 206 (25,7%) con riesgo de adicción a Internet, con predominancia en el sexo masculino (5,3%), procedencia urbana (6,8% vs 3,8%), nivel socioeconómico bajo inferior y bajo superior (6,6%), tiempo de uso >10h/sem (5,9%), acceso en casa (5,8%), seguido del celular (5,2%). Los motivos de uso más frecuentes fueron el tener un espacio personal, jugar en red y el comunicarse con conocidos. Conclusiones: Se encontró una frecuencia de adicción a Internet de 8,5%.
