In this study, Abu al-Barakat al-Baghdadi's understanding of God is discussed. Within this context, God's attributes generally, and those of unity and knowledge specifically are analyzed. To prove essential attributes of God, Abu al-Barakat divides God's existing attributes into essence, attribute and action. Essence has existence itself. The existence at the essence of the attribute is because of essence, with essence and for essence. Also, the attribute is a status found within essence. As for action, comes from essence via attribute. This applies for all existents. Abu al-Barakat accepts positive essential attributes for God. According to him, God is the first principle of all existents with a general principle. According to that principle, God's essence, attributes and actions are the first principle of all essences, attributes and actions. The cause of every existence is referred to God alone. In terms of attributes of absence and deficiency, God can only be characterized with such attributes which are based on negation. According to the philosopher, God actions are dependent on His will, knowledge and target. God's purpose is His generosity. He is the first and the last; the first by being ab actor, the last by being His purpose. All existents are necessary because of His generosity. His generosity is one of its essential attributes. Abu al- Barakat especially analyzes the attribute of divine unity, because it is the most special attribute of God. It indicates God is in every aspect simply one and absolute. Abu al-Barakat criticizes Aristoteles and Ibn Sina on the divine attribute of knowledge. According to him, God's thought and knowledge are due to His essential capacity. Abu al-Barakat refuses the objection that there must be dissimilitude in God when He comprehends those other than Himself and there must be multiplicity in God due to the multiplicity of the comprehended. This is because this multiplicity is not in the essence but in those that are relative and relational, which do not require multiplicity in the essence of God. Changes in the comprehended only relatively speaking cause change in God and do not relate with the divine essence itself.
