A significant number of patients with intractable epilepsy have cortical malformations that originated during neuronal migration. Magnetic resonance imaging plays a primary role in the diagnosis and classification of neuronal migration disorders. These disorders include polymicrogyria, schizencephaly, lissencephaly, heterotopia, and focal cortical dysplasia.
