Robinson says she never intended to write a novel when she began trying her hand at extended metaphors. One of the earliest metaphors she worked on was the image of a passenger train sliding silently off the tracks of a trestle bridge and slipping wholesale into the lake below. It is that image that begins "Housekeeping." Robinson moved away from fiction, choosing to write several nonfiction books. |
