| Sumario: | Heavyweight Scientific/Technical/Medical specialists in Great Britain have staged a robust defence of their journal publishing against mounting opposition from supporters of the emerging open access model, as of March 12, 2004. The publishers told the session that while they were experimenting with the open access model, it was currently uneconomic and threatened to undermine the quality of Great Britain scientific research. Publishers defended themselves against recent sharp increases in journal subscriptions, and said bundled deals instead left libraries better off than before. Crispin Davis, CEO of Reed Elsevier raised the possibility that open access would effectively narrow the availability of research by restricting it to an Internet-only platform.
