Sumario:Background: Ankle injuries often cause a significant decrease in function and lost time in work and/or athletics. There seems to be limited and conflicting research concerning the efficacy of laser on acute soft tissue recovery. The purpose of this study was to examine the short-term effects of a multi-phase wavelength specific low-level laser protocol on acute ankle injuries. Subjects and Methods: Five subjects (mean age 24.6 ± 6.1 years) who recently sustained an ankle injury were studied. Assessments were recorded for pain, range of motion (ROM), disability, and edema prior to each session. Subjects attended 3 sessions within a 10-day period and received laser during the first 2 sessions Results: Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test results indicated significant improvements in pain, range of motion, and disability between sessions 1 and 3. Conclusion: Low-level light (laser) may improve pain, ROM, and disability for patients with acute ankle injuries.
