It reports on overdue books, checkout statistics and search records. St John's is a Catholic high school with a $6000 yearly tuition. The tables and chairs in the library are fifty-three years old. The library has yet to refashion itself into the technological wonderland that graces most other academic libraries. The book collection of the library teeters on extinction. St. John's library collection totaled approximately 3000 books at the beginning of the 2002-2003 school year. Fifteen computers line the library foyer. Each station has a pressed wood tabletop and tilt chairs, a kind of Starship Enterprise command post from which students navigate their way along the information Autobahn. The time factor presents another picture to the St. John's reading syndrome. "The Oxford History of Islam," "The Animal Life Encyclopedia," "Ocean World" and "The Fossil Book," are rooted in the age of innocent knowledge, the junior scholastic genre of topics that beckon us back to the age of wisdom for wisdom's sake.
