| Sumario: | This article presents a qualitative analysis of patients' perspectives on how nurses connect with them to promote healing and health. The population in this setting holds a fundamental distrust between ethnic and social groups. In an atmosphere of conflict, understanding factors in the therapeutic relationship between nurses and patients is crucial. A qualitative analysis of 21 patient interviews and extensive ethnographic field notes shows that building trust through nonverbal and verbal means is key to overcoming ethnic and linguistic difference. Patients reflected that nurses show caring through touch, guidance, investing time, and promoting healing through their attitudes. Patients believe nurses can manage conflict and instill peace building.
