The recovery of the King's health in October prompted spirited celebrations, especially in Barcelona, where the four main institutions --Ciudad, Diputación, Brazo Militar and Lonja del Mar-- organized a series of religious festivities that included the singing of lavish polycoral villancicos whose lyrics are closer to be political pamphlets rather than spiritual poems. This article analyses the circumstances of the celebrations, the politico-doctrinal messages of the villancicos and the characteristics of the surviving scores, two of them attributed to Francisco Valls, that would position him as the leading composer in the Principado for the coming decades. 1696 fue un año difícil en la historia de España debido a los problemas de salud de un monarca sin heredero, y fue vivido de manera especialmente crítica en Cataluña a causa de la invasión francesa durante la Guerra de los Nueve Años. La recuperación de la salud del Rey en octubre dio lugar a celebraciones de júbilo, especialmente destacadas en Barcelona, donde las cuatro principales instituciones --Ciudad, Diputación, Brazo Militar y Lonja del Mar-- organizaron una serie de festividades religiosas que incluyeron el canto de villancicos policorales de grandes dimensiones, cuyas letras están más cerca de ser panfletos políticos que no poemas espirituales.
