| Sumario: | This paper analyzes the relationship between a country's trade openness and innovation. We find evidence that public policies aiming to improve trade openness have a positive impact on the level of innovation in a country. The results are robust to alternative indicators and various forms of measuring innovation. This positive relationship between trade openness and innovation is even stronger in emerging markets. Opening the economy to international trade is a natural route to stimulate innovation in businesses. |
