Even though there are important initiatives and decision-making at governmental and institutional levels, to promote reforms in education systems and to guide the training of individuals towards the development of competencies, the scope of this work allows us to visualize what could be considered as the main barrier or lag in the effective implementation of educational programs and their application in the operation of companies. Considering that the most accessible concept of labor competencies, would be precisely the approach to each of the contexts in which it is intended to be used. El presente trabajo de investigación trata de mostrar los diversos esfuerzos a nivel nacional e internacional, por conceptualizar el término de competencias, en su enfoque hacia la educación y su posterior tránsito e implementación en el ámbito laboral, con la prioridad de contribuir a elevar los índices de productividad y competitividad en las empresas y sus respectivos países. Aun cuando existen importantes iniciativas y tomas de decisión a niveles gubernamentales e institucionales, para impulsar reformas en los sistemas de educación y orientar la formación de los individuos hacia el desarrollo de competencias, el alcance de este trabajo, permite visualizar cuál podría ser considerada como la principal barrera o rezago en la implementación efectiva en los programas educativos y su aplicación en la operatividad de las empresas.
