| Sumario: | The National Union Catalog, Pre-1956 Imprints (NUC) has historically been used to facilitate such library functions as interlibrary loan. Its helpfulness for these functions has declined over the years in favor of other, primarily electronic tools. This article examines the possibility of new uses for the NUC: in particular, as a primary source for historical research in music. Using the four string quartets by Arnold Schoenberg published during his lifetime as a case study, this article shows how holdings and publication data in the NUC can be used to expand our understanding of the reception of these works. |
