Introduction: Aging can have an impact on the quality of life. Purpose: Use data mining for characteristics of the institutionalized elderly population that have an impact on quality of life. Methodology: A retrospective and descriptive study, using a database, referring to functionality (WHODAS 2.0 and Barthel Index), quality of life (WHOQOL-bref), nutritional status (MNA), and socio-demographic data of 82 elderly people aged over 65 and institutionalized, 71 variables were used to perform the data mining by means of the classification task with the algorithm J48 in Weka 3.6 tool. Results: Prevalence of male (62%), age between 71 to 80 years (47.6%), single marital status (32.4%), high functional capacity, high quality of life and nutritional status with nutritional risk (56, 1%). By data mining it was possible to observe the importance of the "meaning of life" as a predictor of quality of life. Conclusion: Functionality and nutrition were correlated with quality of life significantly, the relationship of the "meaning of life" with quality of life is linked to factors such as institutionalization, religiosity and spirituality and can also be a point to be improved through psychology and other health services that support the elderly within institutions.
