La primera institución verdaderamente universitaria de Barcelona fue el Estudio General de Medicina fundado por el rey Martín I en 1401, al que al año siguiente añadió una facultad de Artes. Habría que esperar hasta 1559 para que el ayuntamiento llegara a un acuerdo con la universidad de los médicos y pusiera en práctica el antiguo privilegio que le otorgó Alfonso el Magnánimo, en 1450, para fundar un Estudio General con todas las facultades.
