      ab: Orem's Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory (SCDNT) was used to determine which of the Basic Conditioning Factors (BCF) predicted health-promoting self-care behaviors in African American women (AMW) with type 2 diabetes (T2D). The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), Centers for Disease Control, 2017 data set was used in this study. Results from regression analysis revealed significant predictors among the BCF and the study's dependent variables. Age at diagnosis (R2 = .049, β -.071, p < .05), health care system factors that require visits to a health care provider for follow up care and testing the values of Glycosylated Hemoglobin (HbAlC) levels every three months. African American women who were older did not meet the guidelines for diabetes self-care established by the American Diabetes Association (2019). Among the health state variables, income was significant for general health status, and if these women had a steady income, it meant that they likely had health care coverage. These results demonstrate the utility of Orem s Self-Care deficit Nursing Theory (SCDNT) and its application to diverse populations.
